Alicia Frankovich, Mein Körper, ein Korallenriff? / My Body, a Coral Reef?
Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen, Germany
28 January —
07 May 2023
We humans understand ourselves as unique individuals with a specific character and personal traits. We live here in a western society in which increased individuality is considered a recipe for success. But who is actually this exclusive ME? Scientific studies show that all living beings are meta-organisms and cannot exist on their own. Are we therefore complex ecosystems within ourselves, like a coral reef?
Curated by Julia Katharina Thiemann, Mein Körper, ein Korallenriff? / My Body, a Coral Reef? explores questions about the currently changing self-conception of humans in the post-anthropocene in a humourous and critical way on the framework of international artistic positions. Scientific concepts such as the Radical Endosymbiotic Theory of the US biologist Lynn Margulis (1938-2011) are underlying the exhibition concept, in which contemporary artists speculate on fruitful interconnectedness, interspecies border crossings, and therefore new visions of humanity in an aesthetic way.
The exhibition runtime of "My body, a coral reef?" has been extended until the 7th of May 2023.
