Paul Handley, Redesigning Sovereignty
Mellemrummet Godsbanen, Aarhus, Denmark
01 July —
30 September 2021
Within the walls of Mellemrummet Godsbanen, Paul Handley brings his ongoing international series Redesigning Sovereignty to Aarhus before his project travels to Paris in September 2021.
Designing new sovereign symbols entails a rejection of past human behaviours, a new beginning of sorts. The destruction of ecological systems, government indifference & the rise of nationalism provide an opportunity to re-engage the sovereign flag. The creation of a new utopia where the people control the narrative and demand action from authoritarian regimes. A series of low cost printed symbols creating fluidity within hanging fabric: an engagement between language and activism.

The purpose of The Artists’ Easter Exhibition is to give established artists as well as new talents the opportunity to introduce their works to a large audience. By means of the selection made by the jury, some of the current trends which are expressed in art right now are introduced. Each year, KP receives up to 2000 works for evaluation from around 400 artists - mainly from Denmark and the other Nordic countries, but also from artists from around the world.
This year, the selection includes Melbourne-based artist Paul Handley who presents a series of hand-painted flags from the series Problemet Med Nationalisme. Handley was interviewed by Contemporary HUM in 2017 while exhibiting in Venice: An interview with Paul Handley.
